ABOUT JOEL: Born in Epekwitk/PEI, Joel was encouraged by family and community in the study of music, performance and sound. At age ten he was immersed in live sound technology and acoustics while assisting his father with a touring church choir. In 2002-03, he was awarded consecutive summer work grants at the Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside, gaining experience with theatre sound systems, lighting, stage production and management. Concurrently, Joel started a live sound business for all-ages venues in Charlottetown, PE, raising funds for tuition to attend the Ontario Institute of Audio Recording Technology in London. Graduating with honours in 2004, he moved to K’jipuktuk/Halifax and networked with the artist community while baking bread at the Heartwood Bakery on Quinpool road. Collaborations that began there were consequential in establishing a broad artistic network with opportunities in his field. Starting out in location sound with Andrew Hines and scoring, recording, producing with Rich Aucoin he found a niche in Halifax to build from. International touring as a technician and musician, producing and recording award winning records, sound designing and composing artworks shown nationally, sound mixing for film and television, teaching at NSCAD and Centre for Art Tapes are career paths that have stemmed from those initial collaborations and continue to carry him into new projects and push his technical and artistic practice.

ABOUT RISS: Riss Sean Cruz is a digital multimedia and video performance artist. Cruz’s topics of interest are related to labour, power and surveillance as seen through digital platforms and pop culture. Their experimental videos comprise found footage, 3D modelling, sound design and costumed performances to look at value systems with critical sensibility. These satirical works aim to capture a fast-paced contemporary present and envision possible, liberatory futures.

Riss has been exhibited in venues like InterAccess, Gallery 1C03, Video Pool Media Arts Centre and Struts Gallery and Faucet Media Centre. Cruz’s various projects have been displayed throughout the United States and distributed digitally through spaces like the Centre for Art and Thought, Canadian Art, The Art Gallery of Ontario, PLATFORM Projects and more.
