The Centre for Art Tapes is hiring a Virtual Reality Intern with a project exhibition at MSVU Art Gallery. This position will be a paid five month residency opportunity with a mentorship component. Please note that this position is funded through the Digital Skills for Youth Program. Please see eligibility criteria below. While the intern will have the support of AFCOOP, they will be an employee of CFAT.

The Virtual Reality Internship will function similarly to an artist residency. The Intern’s primary responsibility during their time with us will be to learn new Virtual Reality creation skills and complete a new work in virtual reality to be exhibited at MSVU Art Gallery in June 2023.

Applicants will be asked at the time of submitting for a general idea of what they’d like to create. This could be an environment or film to be viewed in a headset, or a full installation. It is ok if this idea changes throughout the residency. Most of the interns hours will be self directed studio time.

The intern will also be required to develop a workshop teaching one VR skill. This could be how to use a 360 camera, 3D modeling, etc. The workshop needs to be fully developed by March 30th, 2023, but is not required to be taught by the end of the internship.

The ideal candidate would be an emerging media artist. It is not required that they have experience in VR, but ideally would feel comfortable with video and sound. Comfort in both PC environments as well as Adobe suite are encouraged. The intern must be a post secondary graduate, ideally from a related fine arts or tech program.

The intern will be mentored by local VR artist Paloma Dawkins. Paloma will meet with the intern five times, roughly once a month, to discuss the work and troubleshoot any potential issues in the installation. You can learn more about Paloma below.

This position is primarily self directed. The ability to work independently as well as in a collaborative group environment is required. Candidates should be self-starters with the ability to set their own goals and deadlines and ask for feedback and support when needed.

Interested applicants should submit the following:

  • a CV or Resume detailing relevant work experience

  • a cover letter outlining your general project idea and interest in this position.

  • 5 - 10 images max and/or under 3 minutes of video representing your current artistic practice

Applications and any questions can be directed to Riss Sean Cruz, Interim Executive Director at riss@cfat.ca.

All applicants will receive a confirmation email indicating receipt of application. If you do not receive a response within five business days, please contact 902-422-6822

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 15-30 years old (at the start of the internship)

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (must be either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status)

  • Self-identify as underemployed

  • (employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs)

  • Have completed post-secondary studies (Interns in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion)

  • Have no immediate family relationship with the employer

ABOUT PALOMA:

Paloma Dawkins' games are praised for being digital spaces that celebrate natural life and rhythms and the worlds she creates in her games are spaces that incite creative thinking and wonder. Dawkins games and VR spaces carry on these themes and further invites us to be inspired by otherworldly scenes and scenarios, hypnotizing sounds and visual details, trippy patterns, quirky characters and cosmic poetry.
