CFAT Call For Submissions: Archives of the Future

Deadline: Thursday, February 4th 2016 at 5pm

“A standard way of relating politics to art assumes that art represents political issues in one way or another. But there is a much more interesting perspective: the politics of the field of art as a place of work. Simply look at what it does—not what it shows.”

Hito Steyerl. Politics of Art: Contemporary Art and the Transition to Post-Democracy. 2010

The Centre for Art Tapes invites artists to submit media art works that consider the idea of ‘Art as Labour’ for the upcoming program Archives of the Future. Archives of the Future (March 6th – April 17th) will be part of the larger exhibition Why are we saving all these artist publications + Other galleries stuffs? at Dalhousie University Art Gallery running from January 21st – April 17th, 2016. This exhibition will look back at Halifax’s history of Artist Run Centres and their place within the greater arts community. CFAT proposes that this screening explore how the cultural workforce is in constant competition with itself by unwittingly contributing to the global power structures that underpay, overwork and exploit. To resist this exploitation, artists and art institutions must cast a critical eye on the conditions of its own production and display, its own labor.

Multiple works will be chosen and presented within the Dalhousie Media Gallery (4.3m x 8.4m). Works must have been created within the past 5 years, and if durational, a maximum of ten minutes. Works will be selected by the Centre for Art Tapes Programming Committee. Artists will be paid in accordance with CARFAC fee schedule.

To apply please submit:

– A clear and concise description of project, including equipment requirements

– Maximum 10 images or 1 – 3 video/audio clips of submitted work and past work. (If including digital video and/or audio files please include a weblink.)

– Numbered image list, including title, medium, dimensions, year.

– Artist CV

– Artist statement (maximum 250 words)

Proposals must be submitted electronically. Please email submissions to tori@cfat.ca with the subject line Archives of the Future Submission. Submissions later than Thursday, February 4th 2016 at 5pm will not be considered.
