Job Call: Digital Archive and Exhibitions Internship

Temporary Contract

The Centre for Art Tapes is offering a Digital Archive and Exhibitions Internship through the Digital Skills for Youth Program. The intern will undertake detailed training that will allow them to undertake a series of day to day, and longer term tasks::

-Learning video/audio tape digitization and archival methods through CFAT's transfer suite. General operation and maintenance of the suite, including the operation of video tape players, video mixers, capture cards, and the various Standard Definition video formats and signal types.

-Will assist in the development and design of the Transfer Suite as an overall visual studio to be used by membership.  This will include things such as hooking up various video monitors, cabling multiple video systems together with the goal of creating a coherent space that can be utilized by members regardless of skill level 

-Helping to develop CFATS  first digital archive exhibition, transforming our 45-year history of supporting media art production into an interactive, web-accessible digital experience.  Working with game engine technologies and database systems, the intern will digitize historical materials, develop metadata frameworks, and build immersive virtual exhibition spaces for web browsers. This collaborative role will be shaped around the intern's unique interests, technical background, and creative vision as they create an interactive portal to Atlantic Canada's media arts heritage.

-Learning hands-on training for basic program support regarding the Media Arts Scholarship, and FORMAT programs, this will mostly entail answering simple questions or attending the odd art opening.

The intern will be mentored by CFAT staff and community. The position emphasizes emerging technologies, with training opportunities in game engine development, web-based interactive systems, and digital collection management adapted to the intern's skill set and interests. Whether they gravitate toward immersive 3D environments, database architecture, user interface design, or interactive storytelling, the final platform will reflect their creative and technical contributions.

  • Because there is no exact skill set that can be possessed that is perfectly applicable for this job we will look for a participant who possess the desire and ability to independently engage with various technologies and build a practical working skill sets regardless of their credentials.

ELIGIBILITY

Applicants must:

  • Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship

  • Be able to be present at C.F.A.T. during working hours (this is not a remote position)

  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada (either a citizen, permanent resident or person with refugee status - work permits are not eligible)

  • Self-identify as underemployed (i.e. employed below their level of education, holding part-time employment, or in emerging fields with few jobs)

  • Have completed post-secondary studies (exception: interns located in Nunavut, Yukon or NWT are not required to meet this criterion)

  • Have no immediate family relationship with the employer

 

ABOUT CFAT:

CFAT is an artist-driven media art presentation and production centre; our aim is to support the enjoyment, creation and preservation of experimental contemporary media art practices. Our members and collaborating/exhibiting artists are working in media such as video art, experimental sound, animation, filmmaking, electronic and digital art, and media/interactive installation. We take a broad interpretation of the term "media art" aligning ourselves with its genesis from visual art as opposed to film. CFAT values presentation and research in tandem and places an emphasis on programming that furthers the professional development of its exhibiting artists.
